Valentine’s Day doesn’t just have to be a day where couples express their love. Make it a day to say a special “I love you” to family members. Find a special way to celebrate with your family and make it a tradition year after year. Rituals for the family don’t have to be elaborate or expensive (although they can be if you want), the main idea is to spend quality time together.
Valentine’s Day Art Together
Get out the pink, red and white paper and make art work together with a Valentine’s Day theme. You can make cards to give to each other or other family and friends. Another idea is to make a family Valentine’s Day poster. Whatever you create together, make sure to put it on display such as on the fridge, wall or even over the kitchen table as part of the decorations for a special Valentine’s Day meal. Valentine’s Day, Friends and Family
Spread the Valentine’s Day love to family and friends. Get the kids together and make some Valentine cards to send to relatives and friends near and far. Parents can send photos and jot a note or too as well on a separate card or letter. Another idea is to make phone calls to relatives to say Happy Valentine’s Day or maybe make family visits with homemade Valentine’s treats.
Do Some Valentine’s Day Baking
Get in the kitchen with the kids and do some baking with a Valentine’s Day theme. It can be as simple as premade dough that you cut into heart shapes with cookie cutters or using a cake mix and premade frosting to do up a cake. For older kids you could try making the cookies or desserts from scratch. For more ideas check out Quick and Easy Valentine’s Day Desserts.
Valentine’s Day Family Dinner
Have a special dinner to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Make it a family tradition where everyone has an opportunity to say what they love about their family. Get everyone to dress up or make it a Valentine’s Day color theme where people have to wear red, white or pink. It doesn’t have to be dinner either. You can make it as fancy or as simple as you like. Get Active on Valentine’s Day
Get your hearts racing together and do some sports as a family. Not only is it heart healthy it’s a great way to role model the importance of staying active and a great way for the family to bond. If the weather is good, go outdoors and play some soccer, basketball, street hockey or even fly a kite. There are a lot of indoor activities you could do as well. Often bowling alleys, swimming pools and skating rinks will have Valentine’s Day décor and music to match this day of love.
Valentine’s Day Activities
There are a lot of easy and fun things you can do at home depending on your kids’ ages and tastes. You could make up a Valentine’s Day puppet show with the kids or put on a family play. Play a board game or a card game like Hearts together. Go to the library and take out books on Valentine’s Day to read with the kids and/or see if there are any movies for kids that have a Valentine’s Day theme that you can take out. You may want to request them ahead of time so that you can have them ready for February 14th.
Have Family Fun on Valentine’s Day
