For many people it is so devastating to hear about the earthquake that hit Haiti and how people there are still in desperate need. In a January 13, 2010 Miami Herald article, the president of Haiti said, "Parliament has collapsed. The tax office has collapsed. Schools have collapsed. Hospitals have collapsed." He said, "There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them."
The Haitian government was first estimating that up to 100,000 people could be dead after the 7.0 magnitude quake hit on January 12, 2010. But in a January 18, 2010 Miami Herald article, the European Commission said that the latest Haitian government figures have since doubled with an estimated 200,000 people dead and 1.5 million people now homeless.
